When one reads something about a period of history, one is always at the mercy of the opinion of the author. As you get older though, you can actually remember things because you lived through them. Having just hit the tender age of 64 I can remember my college days as a history major when historians actually DIFFERED on matters like "what caused the Civil War?" Difference of opinions was the norm back then. Further, even pro-union authors didn't take swipes at the South. And judging past peoples by contemporary standards was nearly unheard of.

Fast forward to the present and (with a few notable exceptions) nearly every academic or historical author is spouting the same drivel on this particular subject. When I was young, different opinions were what actually constituted the "study of History." Today, all are in perfect agreement and indeed, no difference of opinion (at least on this subject) is tolerated. All is peaceful it seems.....but it is the peace of THE HIVE!! In short, there is no "History" any more, at least not as I remember it.

Valerie, you hit the nail on the head with this passage.....

>>>Now, in the not-too-distant past, this strategy could not have been utilized. Scholars would not be silenced, neither would they permit such actions against others of their kind. They knew that if they allowed censorship, there would be no way they could insure that they themselves would not be censored should the time come that they supported an unpopular point of view. <<<<

Whenever I bring this point up I get called names. Apparently they would like everyone to forget there was such a time. But Diplomacy has never been my strong suit so I fire back with a few names of my own..... and whenever I can, I try and remind younger people that there was a time when things were different.

Bill VallanteChuck Demastushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05639883904130063892noreply@blogger.com
