Let Our School Bands Play Dixie!!!

By Calvin E. Johnson, Jr.
cjohnson1861@bellsouth.net

Is America still the land of the free?

If we are truly free, why is our song "Dixie" banned at many high schools and universities? Why, too, are young people taught diversity and sensitivity toward the heritage of some people but not others?

What happened to America's grand old song "Dixie?"

Autumn is an exciting time for high school and college football. School bands will play to lift the soul but students, teachers, parents and fans will not hear "Dixie." Many of our institutions of learning have stopped playing Dixie even thought this song is loved the world over.

What happened to "Dixie" that was the official band music of the Confederate and Union Armies? What happened to this song that Northern and Southern children sang from their schools standard song book?

In 1859 Dan Emmett, the author of Dixie, first introduced his song at a minstrel show before a delighted New York audience. It is also written that a African-American family, the Snowdens, may have encouraged Emmett in his writing.

As a young boy, I remember going to the Great Southeastern Fair, in Atlanta, Georgia, and hearing "Dixie" coming from the Carousel. I also remember my teacher closing the window as the Headland High School Band rehearsed outdoors to "Dixie."

Today, men and women serve overseas to free the oppressed people of Iraq....But school bands are no longer allowed to play "Dixie" and "Under God" is under attack in the pledge of allegiance.

Country music singer Lee Greenwood, who sang "God Bless the USA" and "Dixie" may have become politically incorrect. Yes, this Northern born American included "Dixie" on his "American Patriot" CD.

There was a time not long ago when high school bands played Dixie and public prayers asked for the safety of the football players and safety of the men and women of our United States Armed Forces.

Back when prayer started a school day, streets were safer and news was not filled with murder, rape and hatred.

Imagine for a moment that you are taken back to a high school football game of that time. The prayer had been prayed and the band begins to play Dixie. There is a huge cheer that builds as this tune is played. The people rise as one to cheer and sing this song that they love.

My late friend Eddie Page always said, "Know the truth and the truth will set you free!"

Eddie was a Black musician, soldier and historian. He loved the USA and the American South, where he was born. He knew American history that is no longer taught. On his grave marker are the words, "Look away, Dixieland!"

Please join me in praying for our nation and write your local high school and college sports director, asking them to include "Dixie" at all school events. Are we really free?

God Bless and Have a Dixie Day!!!

The Southern Legal Resource Center Heritage Update

DICKSON COUNTY SCHOOLS DROP FLAG BAN

In what may have been one of the least-heralded policy reversals of the Southern Culture War, Dickson County, Tennessee, public schools have quietly abandoned their ban on campus displays of Confederate symbols.

The lifting of the ban climaxed a chain of events that began in October of 2006, when the SLRC wrote a demand letter to the school board’s attorney on behalf of a Sons of Confederate Veterans member whose son had been adversely affected. The attorney never replied and it was later discovered that the school system had changed attorneys. On August 17 of this year, Knoxville Attorney and SLRC Board member Van R. Irion contacted the school board on behalf of the student and his parents, citing viewpoint discrimination and calling the Board’s attention to pending lawsuits on similar grounds in Anderson and Blount Counties in Tennessee. On September 6, the student’s father contacted Irion to say that the ban had been lifted, without fanfare.

“When I contacted the school board I made sure they understood the implications of those Blount and Anderson County cases,” said Irion, who is prosecuting both cases with the SLRC acting in an advisory capacity.

“This is a clear-cut and very important victory,” Irion said. “Too often people get preoccupied with just the heritage cases that end up in court, but when we can get the opposition to back down without even having to litigate, that’s even better. The SLRC has had several such victories lately and so have I,and that’s when you know the precedents are really starting to take hold. I’m very optimistic about the way things are starting to look. The important thing is to keep fighting.”

Irion noted that two schools in Knox County, Tennessee, have recently relaxed their dress codes so as to allow Confederate symbols.

SLRC, GEORGIA SCV HAMMER OUT RINGGOLD STRATEGY

RINGGOLD, GA – SLRC Chief Trial Counsel Kirk D. Lyons held a weekend strategy session with members of the Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans regarding the next steps to be taken in compelling the Town of Ringgold to replace the Confederate Battle Flag it removed two years ago from the Historic Ringgold Depot memorial site.

“We’ve arrived at an overall game plan that we have every confidence will be successful,’ Lyons said, “but it’s going to require careful coordination and maximum security. That’s why, for the time bring, we’re not letting the general public know our plans. I can say this – it’s going to be a real team effort.”

The Ringgold town council removed the flag in March of 2005, following objections to its presence by the local NAACP. Members of the local SCV camp argued for its restoration, citing Georgia statutes prohibiting interference with a memorial display, but were rebuffed by the Council’s attorney. The town then substituted a blue Hardee-pattern corps flag for the battle flag which it claimed was historically correct because it was the unit flag of Confederate forces who fought at the Battle of Ringgold Gap (November 27, 1863). SCV members countered that the Battle Flag, as a soldiers’ and later a veterans’ flag, was the appropriate flag, as the display was intended to honor all Confederates who left for all theaters of the war from Ringgold Depot, and not just those involved in the action there. The matter remained in limbo until April of this year, when the Georgia Division of the SCV retained the SLRC to pursue the matter.

“Our plan should be well under way within the month,” Lyons said.

Virginia SCV Press Release

William Howell, Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, has set new standards in how far political correctness has come in Virginia. The clever ruse used by the Speaker to ultimately banish the Confederate Battle Flag from the museum setting of the Old Hall of the House of Delegates could only be described as despicable. He was willing to also remove the flag of the United States and the flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia to stifle criticism of his action and hide its true purpose. Never mind that the Speaker stated that he had received NO complaints about the flags in that room. Never mind that the flags have been in that room for generations, even as early as 1932. Never mind that there was no official consultation with the House or Senate membership, many of whom would strongly object to his heavy handed actions. It is not surprising that only one flag from the Old Hall will be permanently removed--- the Battle Flag. The responsibility for this lies solely on Howell’s shoulders. It is not surprising that the removal of the Salute was also engineered by Speaker Howell.

Brave men died fighting under that flag. In other states, their sacrifices are memorialized on their respective state capitol grounds. Virginia has only the Battle Flag in the Old Hall to honor the common soldier of Virginia. Today, modern politicians such as Mark Earley and George Allen have learned the hard way that the populace of Virginia holds a warm spot today for that flag as an honored and respected symbol of Virginia history. It is a sad day in the Commonwealth when people like the Speaker need to devise clever ploys to remove American and Virginia flags in order to get to the one they can’t seem to deal with. Speaker Howell should be ashamed. The Battle Flag should forever be on permanent display in the State Capitol as a tribute to the thousands of Virginians who gave their all to protect and defend the Commonwealth.

Virginia Press Release regarding Allen's Battle Flag tactics

The Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will hold a press briefing in front of the South entrance of the General Assembly Building adjacent to the State Capitol in Richmond, Virginia, beginning at 10:30am on Thursday, September 28, 2006.

State Commander Frank Earnest of Virginia Beach will answer questions from the press relating to the recent statements of Senatorial candidate George Allen regarding the Confederate Battle Flag. The Sons of Confederate Veterans strongly disagrees with Senator Allen’s remarks relating to the Battle Flag and opposes bigotry in any form, including the “macaca moment” which came from the Senators own mouth. The SCV is concerned that Senator Allen has deviously tried to divert attention from his own remarks and past activities to malign a flag which millions of Virginians have a great deal of pride in.

The SCV has recently conducted programs honoring Jewish Confederates at Hollywood Cemetery and last Saturday conducted the Dick Poplar Program honoring black Confederate and Petersburg native Dick Poplar.

Commander Earnest strongly feels that “there is no place for bigotry in Virginia or her electoral process”.

Anyone needing information on this press conference should contact Brag Bowling at 804.389.3620.

The Confederate Battle Flag

By Leon Puissegur
writer522@juno.com

The Confederate Battle Flag, never has one flag been attacked by so many parts of society. This flag was NEVER intended to be abused by those with evil thoughts of secular societies. Actually the Confederate Battle Flag was conceived on the battlefield of First Bull Run by General P.G.T.Beauregard a General from St. Bernard Parish in the Southeast part of Louisiana. From the time it was first used in battle to the end of the War Between the States, this flag held an honor of those who fought under it and with it.

It was not until late in 1956 that the Confederate Battle Flag was used by unethical groups at the encouragement of Northern reporters seeking front-page coverage of what was going on in the South. It may have been a coincidence that the Confederate Battle Flag was seen during the integration movement, or a very well planned event by those who did not care for or like the people of the South. It was at this time that President Dwight D Eisenhower signed a proclamation to celebrate the history of the War Between the States. This was also the same time that the “Civil Rights” movement began, another coincidence or a very well planned event?

During the 60’s to the 90’s the Confederate Battle Flag was abused by many groups whom had thoughts contrary to the main line citizen. These “fringe” groups abused the flag to garner support while at the same time destroying the honor the flag held. It was due to these groups such as the KKK, Aryan Nations, Hitler groups, Skin Heads and so on that gave a bad name to the Confederate Battle Flag. Now instead of attacking those groups who abused this flag, people are attacking the flag itself for reasons of which the flag does not represent.

Now comes the year 2000 and on, the Confederate Battle Flag has been abused and cursed by those outside of the South so much that what they say seems to be the truth. This is just what those of Communist ideals would like people to believe. Now our very government itself rather then stay outside of this dilemma enter it with a “politically correct” idea of what the flag really means. To these people the Confederate Battle Flag has no place in American history, it is from a group of people whom some have called traitors. Now let the FACTS be known.

The Confederate Battle Flag has been abused by groups such as the KKK, Aryan Nation, Skin Heads, Nazi Party, and so on, but of these groups, only the Nazi Party does not also use the flag of the United States. Many say the Confederate Battle Flag represents slavery; this is so far from the truth that it should NEVER be taken as true. To begin with the Confederate Battle Flag was designed to save lives on the battlefield. It was honored during and after the War Between the States, it was not until the late 1950’s and early 1960’s that the Confederate Battle Flag was labeled as a flag of slavery, because it NEVER was. The reason it was labeled that way was to gain support for the racial problems built by people from the North coming into the South and saying things needed to change. Has anyone ever wondered why integration started in the South? That was because the North did not want it to start up there; they wanted the South to be shown for what they laid claim to what it was.

Much of what is said about slavery is done to divert direction of what really happened, that being the United States and England were the principles responsible for the origin of slavery and the growth of slavery. England controlled slavery in the Americas for 155 years, then the United States controlled slavery for another 89 years. Yet if you listen to those who defame the Confederate Battle Flag and the South, it was started and grown in the South only. That is the biggest misdirection play of the entire life of the New World. Using that idea, some with little knowledge or mentality are led to believe that the South was responsible for the growth of and importation of slavery. Slaves were brought through the ports in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Philadelphia, and Rohde Island this is a fact that is seldom told because those who belittle the South want you to believe that the South was responsible for it all, that is not so, the North was responsible for the importation of slaves and they made money off of the trade. Many have heard of the rum trades, which was started with slave trading and done in the North. These are all facts presented to you, if you love the South, do what you can to keep our beloved Confederate Battle Flag flying from all places. If we do not keep it flying, we will lose it for all time. It is up to you to preserve our HERITAGE.

Quote

The ongoing battle to suppress the South, outlaw the Confederate flag, and deny as well as distort history, is a crime against the honor and history of Southern people. It is a genocide being performed to satisfy the concept of a multinational people. And of all things it is being led by Southerners against their own people! If we do nothing evil will triumph. We must all do more. Martin Luther King proclaimed, "Civil disobedience to unjust laws is the commandment of God." He certainly was successful. We need a revival of Southern ideals, customs, beliefs, and truths--one world laws be hanged.
